Gentleman is the first track from Nigerian Afrobeat musician/instrumentalist Fela Kuti’s studio album, Gentleman, released in 1973.
The song’s subject matter expresses Fela’s concerns about Africans that still had a colonial mentality after the departure of the British -which is evident in the song’s cover artwork. His words like “I know what to wear but my friend don’t know” show his bewilderment on why his fellow Africans would wear so much clothing in the typical African heat.
The song which gave rise to the very popular afrobeat slang of recent times, “I no be gentleman like that”, was written and produced by Kuti and recorded with his Africa 70 band.
