From a Distance was written in 1987 by Julie Gold, an American singer-songwriter. Julie Gold‘s friend, Christine Lavin, then introduced the song to Nanci Griffith who first recorded it for her album, Lone Star State of Mind, released the same year.
It quickly became a favorite of Griffith’s fans around the world. The song also became subject of many interpretations and covers by artistes, with the most famous being the Bette Midler version.
